Have you ever found yourself up late at night or into the wee hours of the morning craving a fresh, home-baked cookie? Perhaps you are studying for an exam, putting the finishing touches on a science project, or working on a last minute break in the case that could prove your client's innocence. Yet, all you can think about is a warm, gooey cookie.
Your cravings are being answered by a small startup called Insomnia Cookie. The bakery offers cookie delivery in areas surrounding its over 130 stores almost around the clock. With late nights being highlighted, now you can get your cookie fix and continue on with that project.
This article will answer all the questions you may have: who is this cookie vendor? Where are they located? How much does it cost? Can I order at 3 am? The answers to all that a more, including how Krispy Kreme fits into the mix, are answered below.
Who Is Insomnia Cookie?
The small bakery is a startup company that was designed by Seth Berkowitz while he attended the University of Pennsylvania in 2003. He began baking cookies in his dorm room, which led to other students wanting cookies. Berkowitz then started delivering to other student’s dorm rooms late at night, and the concept was born.
Less than a year later, the first brick and mortar store was opened, baking and delivering cookies late into the night.
By 2016 the company had over 100 physical stores (and had already started, used and discontinued using food trucks), and was continuing to grow and flourish. The franchise has a cult-like following, and it is no wonder that almost all of its 135 stores are located in or around college campuses.
Recently, JAB Holdings juggernaut, Krispy Kreme acquired the cookie delivery company, taking controlling stock over the company but leaving it in the capable hands of Berkowitz, who remains CEO.
The two companies, both acquired by JAB Holdings, join the ranks of Panera, Au Bon Pain and Pret a Manger. With the support and backing of these companies, the cookie delivery startup is bound to grow exponentially.
Where Is Insomnia Cookie Located?
With over 130 stores opened in just 12 years, there is either a location already near you, or there soon will be. The first stop for the brick and mortar franchise is to be located in or around every college campus possible.
With the first one in Pennsylvania, the company soon expanded East and South and finally North. Now you can find a cookie shop in New York, South Carolina, and even Los Angeles, and anywhere in between.
You can visit the website and input your zip code. This will show you the closest physical location near you. With 135 stores there should be one close, but it won’t reach everyone in the nation, so for those outside the circle, you will just have to wait.
If you live near a college campus, though, the odds are high that you either already have one or the plans for a shop are already in the works.
When Can I Place My Order For Delivery?
9 am - 3 am
Almost every brick and mortar shop front has operating hours from 9 am to 3 am; some don’t open until 10 am though.
As soon as the store is open for business, they will begin taking delivery orders. With the bulk of their business coming late at night (studying college kids) the delivery runs all the way up to 3 am in most instances.
The delivery options may be limited during heavy business hours, though every attempt is made to get the cookies to your door in under 45 minutes. While the main premise of the operation is to have late night deliveries of warm, fresh cookies brought right to you, the stores do have to close.
Depending on the area and the amount of business in and out of the storefront, delivery may be suspended earlier than 3 am. Of course, when you call, visit the website or enter the store, the employees will be happy to let you know when their specific hours of delivery are.
As a franchise, however, the idea is to have the delivery hours of 10 am to 3 am every day. You can even schedule a delivery ahead of time. If you know, you will be hitting the books and working into the wee hours of the morning you can call ahead and have the cookies delivered hours later, when you need them most.
Does Insomnia Cookies Only Offer Cookies?
The Insomnia Cookies franchises mainly offer cookies. Each store offers a dozen different types of cookies including M&M, Chocolate Chip, Red Velvet (during Valentine's day), White Chocolate Macadamia and Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup, to name just a few.
Cookies aren’t the only thing they offer though. You will also be able to order ice cream, cookie sandwiches, and cookie cakes. Flavors of these items will vary from store to store so you will need to visit or call to find out what they have in your area.
You can also order brownies. The freshly made brownies (along with the ice cream) have a choice of toppings as well; You can add chocolate chips, sprinkles or candy flavors to the ice cream or brownies as you see fit.
As if that wasn’t enough, each store also carries milk and water. Of course, you will need milk (white or chocolate) to dunk your cookies into.
The stores offer specials, such as two cookies and milk, a box of cookies, or a build-your-own style option. Seasonal cookies are also available, such as Red Velvet, Apple Pie, and others, depending on the time of year.
Are There Other Options For Delivery?
While each store does deliver well into the night and the early morning hours, you aren’t without options.
Depending on the area you live in, and the time of day you want to place your order for delivery, you can also use a third party delivery service. Food delivery guru GrubHub offers delivery services if you want to go that route.
There may come a time when the store is so busy, and the drivers are so overwhelmed that using GrubHub may result in faster service. Although slow service is something that is rarely complained about.
If you do opt for a GrubHub delivery, you will pay the GrubHub fee on top of your order fee as well, it is an added cost, which some college students may wish to avoid, but in times of late night craving crisis, it may be worth the few extra bucks.
The cookie company also offers catering and events. From a birthday party to weddings, the cookie company can help you out in planning the perfect cookie set up for you and your guests.
How Much Does Delivery Of Insomnia Cookies Cost?
The overall cost of the service will depend on what you order. The high percentage of orders coming through on a regular basis is less than $10. There are some menu items that are higher and a rare few combinations that can exceed $20.
$30 after taxes
Larger boxes, like the traditional 24 count box, will reach over $30 after taxes.
On top of the cost of the cookies, cakes or brownies, you will be required to pay the sales tax as well. Unless you live in an area that doesn’t have a sales tax, of course. All others will be required to cover the local or state sales tax amount, which has a current nationwide average of about 8.5 percent.
There is also a delivery fee of $1.99 added to each order, and a tip is automatically calculated in the total for you. While some dislike the automatic tip, there isn’t much of an option otherwise, except to drive down and pick up the cookies yourself.
The tip amount will vary based on the total cost and could be another factor in choosing a third party delivery service, like GrubHub, instead of the store delivery.
While the Insomnia Cookies delivery schedule is unlike any other bakery, the late night cravings get satisfied on and near college campuses nationwide.
After being acquired by Krispy Kreme, the tandem plans to take over the sweet tooth of America, one cookie (or brownie) at a time.
If you are looking for a late night cookie delivery, you have found it. With over 135 stores nationwide you are sure to find one close to you. With a little patience and a little planning you can have warm, fresh from the oven baked cookies, brownies and cakes delivered right to your door. Don’t forget the milk!
